I was out of the planet for the past few days and has just gotten back tonight. I know I’m the last person to see this “funny” video.
The poor guy was actually a friend back in college. The way he was portrayed in the report, and the way the viewers of this video have judged him, it’s as if how he was brought up and what he has done for the past 25 years of his life did not matter anymore. He has been reduced into this guy who treated his car like a submarine in floody Mother Ignacia Avenue.
Chris Lao is a smart guy. We were never classmates,(he took Philosophy in undergrad and I took Comm Research) but we both spent our first year in UP at the freshmen dorm – Kalayaan Residence Hall. He’s a basement boy, while I stayed at the second floor. I usually hangout at the basement, so I get to talk to him every now and then. We were 17 back then. A couple of years after he ran for the student council, and won. I think he even graduated a Summa Cum Laude. After college, he went to law school, while I worked for a lawfirm in Bangkok. When I got back in Manila, I bumped into him at the gym . He told me he stopped law school for a year coz he’s got a year old baby at that time. That was the last time I saw him, well, personally.
And now he is being repeatedly murdered online by this viral video. Ridiculed by people who get amused by things as such. I get it. It’s easy to laugh at these stuff, call him stupid and arrogant. But what these judging people failed to see is that the reporter is equally stupid, let alone irresponsible for showing this kind of report.
If you look closely at the motive of the report, one could only imagine a bored reporter waiting for a mishap to happen so he can have something to report for the day.The more ridiculous, the better. Oh, it’s already 3 AM, has someone died in a five-car highway accident yet? None yet? Dammit. That’s how it looked like to me at the least. O look what we have here, a floating car. Roll!
Then Mr. Reporter interviews Chris who was obviously very very much upset (who wouldn’t get upset with the situation anyway), with emotions ready to explode at the strike of the right buzzwords:
Hindi mo alam na ganun siya kalalim? …Well andito kami e, nasurprise nga kami na…Well hindi mo ba narealize na baka malalim?
Boom! Chris explodes, reporter is happy. He’s got news.
So are you happy now Mr. Reporter, airing this news about a smart guy who was just caught off-guard with his flying emotions understandably because of the situation. Are you happy to have provoked him into saying “why me?” with your arguing and yakking instead of just letting him explain, which perhaps would’ve contained him and would not have made his emotions blown up into something deemed ridiculous by your viewers? Why didn’t you shorten the clip into something which would not be too compromising on his part? Or didn’t you even realize you have provoked him into saying that so perhaps you can have something to report on – even stating Pati kami, sinisi ng driver. You know at his current state of mind at that time that he didnt mean it, but you need to say it anyway to put a dash of human interest in your report. At the expense of this poor guy, you bast*rd.
Thanks to great editing, we’ve got news. A patch of stupid line here, and there, and a short VO – Viola! Comic relief! But if you listen to what he is saying, actually, he makes sense. He just wants proper information. He miscalculated his way. And there should be enforcers guiding the motorists, or at least they shouldve blocked the road. Makes sense. People saying that “isn’t it too obvious the flood is too deep” should also lobby for those yellow and black markers on roadsides to be removed and those orange plastic triangle thingies be changed into gray.
This is no different from reports showing the footage of family members crying hysterically over the dead body of a murdered loved one. You love it when that happens. Disgusting.
Sensational news. Broadcast journalism gone terribly cheap. Definitely worse than Metro Manila flooding. GMA News should get rid of these reporters.
And lastly, to everyone who’s shooting him on the face with your stupid and arrogant comments, try driving.
